The villain of next year’s Wolverine 3 has been revealed and we’ve got the details for you right now! It looks like we won’t have to wait as long as we thought to see fan favorite “Mr. Sinister” on the big screen. If you saw the end credit scene in this summer’s X-Men: Apocalypse, you know that the genetics obsessed villain “Mr. Sinister” will eventually be making his way on to the big screen, but thanks to that film’s recent digital release, we now know he’ll first be seen in next year’s Wolverine 3. As you may recall, the end credit scene in Apocalypse features several suited men entering the facility from earlier in the film where Wolverine was revealed to be held. The men grab a vial of blood labeled “Weapon X” and place it in a suitcase with an “Essex Corp” tag on it. While this referenced “Mr. Sinister’s” alter ego “Nathaniel Essex” and directly connected to “Wolverine”, many thought it was a precursor to the next X-Men movie, but thanks to audio commentary on the digital release from director Bryan Singer and writer/producer Simon Kinberg, we now know this scene is a direct setup to Hugh Jackman’s final Wolverine movie. We’ve known for some time that Wolverine 3 will be a loose adaption of the “Old Man Logan” storyline and set photos have also revealed that we will be introduced to a young “X-23”; who is a female clone of Wolverine. While it’s unclear if “Sinister” will be the film’s main villain, his appearance does suggest he will likely play a role in X-23’s creation. As for which actor will bring the iconic comic book villain to life, Richard E. Grant seems like the most likely candidate. When he was announced, Grant’s character’s name was left a mystery, but he was described as quote, “a villainous mad scientist type”, which would be an adequate description of “Mr. Sinister”. For those of you unfamiliar with “Mr. Sinister”, in the comics he is a 19th century biologist who becomes obsessed with genetics and the search for immortality. He eventually meets “Apocalypse”, who genetically alters his body which turns him into “Mr. Sinister”. While we can look forward to seeing “Sinister” introduced in Wolverine 3, he likely will end up showing up in future movies as well. In the comics, “Mr. Sinister” has a strong connection to “Cyclops” and “Jean Grey” which could play out in a future X-Men movie as well as the time-travelling mutant “Cable”, who will appear in Deadpool 2. “Sinister” could also potentially play a role in the Gambit movie, if it ever ends up actually getting made. So, what do you think of “Mr. Sinister” appearing in next year’s Wolverine 3 and is Richard E. Grant a good choice to portray him? Share your thoughts in the comments and then click here to find out what we want to see happen in the movie when it arrives in theaters on March 3rd, 2017. I’m Sinead de Vries, thanks for watching and we’ll see you soon with more movie news!
