Star Wars 7 Character Name Origins Explained

Director J.J. Abrams is sharing details about the names of some of the new characters we’ll see in the next Star Wars movie and we’ve got the breakdown right here on Clevver Newsfeed! Shakespeare once asked “What’s in a name?” and when it comes to Star Wars characters, the answer is a lot. From Darth Vader to Chewbacca, Star Wars has always featured characters with interesting names and even more interesting origins behind them and it looks like that will remain the case with the newest installment. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, director J.J. Abrams shared some details about the names of some of the new characters that will be introduced in this December’s The Force Awakens starting with our new heroes, “Finn” and “Rey”. When he first revealed the names of the characters that will be played by John Boyega and Daisy Ridley respectively, there was an obvious omission – they’re last names. Abrams wouldn’t go into specifics, but did say that it is completely intentional that they have not made the names public, leading us to believe, like has been rumored for a long time that they are names we will be very familiar with. Rey has long been thought to have the last name “Solo” and that she is the daughter of Princess Leia and Han Solo. Of course, if she is, the big question then is how did she end up living as a scavenger on a desert planet? As for Finn, the most likely candidate for a well know surname is “Calrissian”, but again, why would Lando’s son end up becoming a Stormtrooper for The First Order? So many questions! One character that likely doesn’t have famous parents is Oscar Isaac’s X-Wing pilot “Poe Dameron”. Abrams revealed that both names have a personal meaning with “Poe” being the name of his daughter’s stuffed polar bear and “Dameron” is the last name of his assistant. He acknowledges that they had other names in mind for the character and thought it would eventually be changed, but it just ended up feeling right and stuck. As for our favorite new character, the little rolling droid called “BB-8”, despite many thinking it comes from Abram’s producing partner, Bryan Burk, Abrams says it actually just came about because he looks like an 8 and a pair of B’s. The name came about early in development and Abrams says it never changed. Of course it wouldn’t be a Star Wars movie without villains and we previously told you that “Kylo Ren”, played by Adam Driver, isn’t his original last name, but comes from his involvement with a group known as the “Knights of Ren”. He won’t be the only villain in the film though. Domhnall Gleeson plays “General Hux”, a young general of The First Order who is eager to show off their military might. Abrams doesn’t remember the exact origin of his name, but says it likely came from the long walks he and co-writer Lawrence Kasdan would take when developing the story and could have been taken from one of the tombstones in the cemetery near his office. He does however know where the name “Captain Phasma” comes from. Phasma is the chrome plated Stormtrooper, played by Game of Thrones’ Gwendoline Christie and the name is homage to the 1979 horror film, Phantasm. Abrams explained that the chrome design reminded him of the deadly, chrome ball from that film and we suspect Phasma will be just as menacing. So there you have it, a breakdown of some of the names of the new characters we’ll see in Star Wars The Force Awakens when it arrives in theaters on December 18th.
