Why Wolverine Time Travels In X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST

Wondering why Wolverine is making the leap back in time in next summer's X-Men Days of Future Past instead of Kitty Pryde? The screenwriter of the film fills us in. Comic book fans are most likely pretty used to movies taking liberties with some of their favorite characters and storylines. Just look at how The Mandarin was portrayed in this summer's Iron Man 3 as a perfect example. So when it was revealed that Wolverine would be going back in time to stop the dystopian future where mutants are hunted by Sentinels instead of Kitty Pryde, like in the original comics, it wasn't too big of a surprise. But it still had some of you out there asking "why". After all, Ellen Page will be reprising her role as Kitty Pryde in the film, so why not just stick to the source material? Well, screenwriter Simon Kinberg recently spoke about the decision to Total Film explaining that one of the main and probably most obvious reason is the fact that Wolverine is quote "the protagonist of the franchise, and probably the most beloved character to a mass audience." That reasoning probably won't come as a surprise to most of us. After all, not only is Wolverine a more well known character than Kitty Pryde when it comes to mainstream audiences, but Hugh Jackman is one of the biggest stars around. But, Kinberg pointed out that Jackman and Wolverine's star power wasn't the only reason for the decision. The change also came down to logistics explaining that since the person going back was sending their conscious back in time instead of their actual physical body like most time travel stories, Wolverine made the most sense with the film's timeline. In order to send Kitty Pryde's mind back in time to her younger self, she'd have to actually exist in the early 1970's, which she didn't. Kinberg explained saying quote, "Obviously in the book it's Kitty... But you're talking about an actress who, in the age of Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy, would have been negative 20 years old. So we started thinking again, and the first reflex response to that was a character who doesn't age. Wolverine is the only character who would look the same in 1973 as he does in the future." So there you have it, the real reason why Wolverine will be heading back in time to help stop the dystopian future instead of Kitty Pryde. Do you think it was the right decision or do you think they should have figured out a way for it to still be Kitty Pryde making the journey or someone other than Wolverine?
