Dan Aykroyd Talks 'Ghostbusters' Future

So after over 20 years of holding our breath about the third installment of Ghostbusters, we have a little bit of good news and that's that the project isnt dead yet! Pun intended.
Dan Aykroyd sat down with Esquire and said that they were "closer than weve ever been" to seeing the movie come together and perhaps we will see a shooting schedule starting late next year with original Ghostbuster's director, Ivan Reitman, on board to also direct this time around.
What's with all the delays? Well, we reported to you last year that Bill Murray wasn't interested in taking on the project as Dr. Peter Venkmant, who was first billed in the original back in 1984, and in response to his fellow SNL's alum's decision to opt out, Akroyd said "Had Billy chosen to do the Eisenberg/Stupnitsky [writers of the US version of The Office] script of two years ago, it would be out this summer, and it would be a massive hit...Then when he said, 'Absolutely not, I'm not in this,' we had to go and really rethink things."
It sounds like there might have been some off screen drama here, but Akryod did say "we'll always leave a hole for him. He's always there. He can always come back at any time and be rebuilt into it, as far as I'm concerned."
As for the new draft of the script? Well Etan Cohen, who penned Tropic Thunder, is working on a new version from the older draft written by Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky. Appartently, there are also plans to make an additional two or three movies but Aykroyd and the other original cast members would take a backseat to the new generation in the fourth film which might have the newcomers fighting ghosts in hell. But even with all of these exciting plans for the future out there, there is still no word from Sony on the production side of things.
