For those of you wondering if director J.J. Abrams would stay on to helm Episodes 8 & 9 of the new Star Wars trilogy, we may have your answer. According to Deadline, the answer is a resounding no. The site is reporting that Disney and Lucasfilm are currently in negotiations with Looper's Rian Johnson to take over the franchise and write and direct the next two installments that are set to hit theaters in 2017 and 2019. No word on why Abrams won't return to helm the entire trilogy, but we know he originally turned down directing Episode VII due to the long commitment and being away from his family for so long, so we're guessing an additional four year commitment may have been too much for him. We spoke to Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy at CinemaCon last year and asked if they were interested in having Abrams return to helm the entire trilogy. Here's what she had to say. Of course, a big benefit to bringing on a new director to finish the trilogy is the fact that they will have the next two years to write the scripts and prep, something Abrams wouldn't have time to do until after Epsiode VII releases next December. In addition to Looper, Johnson also wrote and directed 2008's The Brothers Bloom starring Mark Ruffalo, Adrien Brody and Rachel Weisz and the critically acclaimed 2006 indie flick Brick that also starred Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Assuming the deal with Johnson goes through, he will join a list of directors that, in addition to Abrams, includes Godzilla director Gareth Edwards and Chronicle helmer Josh Trank, who will take on two of the three planned spinoff films.
