Production on the next X-Men movie has begun and with it we’re getting our first look at a fan favorite returning character. With production on next year’s X-Men: Apocalypse now officially underway, 20th Century Fox wasted no time in bringing us our first official look at Kodi Smit-McPhee as the new version of “Nightcrawler”. Originally played by Alan Cumming in 2003’s X2: X-Men United, Nightcrawler has long been one character that fans have been wanting to see return to the franchise. Smit-McPhee will of course be playing the teenage version of the troubled mutant with a devilish appearance who has the power of teleportation that includes a signature sound represented as “BAMF” in the comics. In fact, the original announcement included a video of his teleportation with the sound and was later followed by a traditional photo of Smit-McPhee in make-up. In a recent interview with Den of Geek, Smit-McPhee revealed that he plans on making the character his own and different from Cumming’s version saying quote, “I realize the Nightcrawler that is portrayed in X2 is one that has been through quite a bit more and has really embraced the superhero part of him—a kind of violent part. Whereas I think what they’re trying to show here is the more vulnerable Nightcrawler and the one we all kind of related to in the comics. It’s really the fun, happy, swashbuckling Nightcrawler that we all love, so I really can’t wait to portray that.” Smit-McPhee went on to hint that his Nightcrawler will be faithful to the comic, suggesting, like the comics, it will be revealed that he is the son of “Mystique”, played by Jennifer Lawrence in the film and “Azazel” who was played by Jason Flemyng in 2011’s X-Men: First Class and revealed to have been killed in Days of Future Past. Though most people seem to be happy with Smith-McPhee’s “Nightcrawler” look, the biggest criticism seems to be about his hairstyle. Keep in mind though, the film is set in 1983 as shown by this recent tweet from the film’s writer/producer, Simon Kinberg, from the first day of shooting. Though the hairstyle may seem silly, it does fit with a teenager living in the early 80’s. We’ll have to wait to until May 27th next year to see Kodi Smit-McPhee and his hair in action, but what do you think of the new “Nightcrawler”? Head down to the comments or tweet us @ClevverMovies and tell us what you think and then click here to find out what 7 things we think need to happen in the movie. Until next time, I’m Danielle Robay, thanks for watching and we’ll see you soon with more movie news!
