In this episode, the Roswell Flight Test Crew learns about the Yuneec's Firebird fixed-wing FPV drone from Mike McConville. Firebird is the company's first fixed-wing drone and has been designed specifically to deliver a First-Person View (FPV) flying experience using a low-latency, digital video downlink. Along with the new aircraft, Yuneec is introducing the ST-10C controller, which is compatible with both Android and iOS devices. In addition to live video from the aircraft, the video also includes an On-Screen Display (OSD), providing the pilot with telemetry, such as altitude, speed, an artificial horizon, distance to home and other information. The Firebird also includes a head-mounted unit capable of holding the user's smart phone to achieve an immersive flight experience. The Firebird has three flight modes: acro mode, which allows the pilot to stall the aircraft, roll and loop as well as performing other acrobatic maneuvers; stability mode, which limits the user input and prevents acrobatic maneuvering; and, safety mode, which establishes a floor, or hard deck, which the aircraft will not descend below, regardless of pilot input. It also features an automatic landing mode.
