Lupita Nyong'o In Talks For Black Panther Movie

It looks like the Marvel Cinematic Universe could be getting yet another Oscar winner and we’ve got the details. Marvel’s newest hero could be getting some help from one of Hollywood’s hottest young stars. The Hollywood Reporter brings word that 12 Years a Slave Oscar winner, Lupita Nyong’o, is in talks to star opposite Chadwick Boseman in 2018’s Black Panther movie. While specifics on her role are being kept under wraps, she will reportedly play Black Panther’s love interest in the film, which means she won’t be playing “Shuri”, Black Panther’s sister in the comics, if the report is accurate. As for which character she could be playing, Panther is most associated with X-Men “Storm”, which Nyong’o was at one time rumored to be playing, but unless Disney and Fox made some arrangement we don’t know about, that seems highly unlikely. Other love interests Panther has had in the comics include “Monica Lynne” a singer that many in his homeland of Wakanda weren’t happy about, “Monica Rambeau”, a fellow superhero and member of The Avengers who took on the moniker of “Captain Marvel” among others, and “Malaika”, the Wakandan Trade Envoy to Paris. While it’s possible Nyong’o could take on one of these characters in the film, she could also be playing a brand new character not seen in the comics. Nyong’o already has a long history with Marvel Studio’s parent company Disney. She is playing “Maz Kanata” in the new Star Wars films as well as voicing the wolf “Raksha” in Disney’s recent hit, The Jungle Book. She will next star in Queen of Katwe for the studio, which is set to arrive in theaters in September. Production on Black Panther is expected to begin early next year for a February 16th, 2018 release. In addition to Chadwich Boseman and potentially Lupita Nyong’o, the film is also expected to see Andy Serkis reprise his role as Avengers: Age of Ultron villain “Ulysses Klaue” as well as Martin Freeman’s “Everett Ross”, who made his MCU debut in Captain America: Civil War.
