Director J.J. Abrams is known to be super secretive when it comes to his films, but it looks like he could be having a change of heart - or he's been locked in a closet somewhere on the Paramount lot - because Star Trek fans will get a chance to see the first nine minutes of the upcoming sequel a whole five months before the film's theatrical release!
Paramount Pictures have announced that the first look will arrive in approximately 500 digital Imax 3D theaters starting December 14th. Tickets to the first of three The Hobbit films were already selling fast and we're guessing a chance to be one of the first to see the new Star Trek footage will be a huge bonus many of you won't want to pass up.
This isn't the first time studios have used Imax to build buzz for their films as The Dark Knight Rises premiered it's opening sequence on Imax screens back in December, seven months before the film was released. Like that film, Abrams shot several sequences using Imax cameras, but this will be the first time exclusive footage will be shown in Imax 3D. Imax Chairman and President Greg Foster calls the footage that will be shown, "absolutely incredible" and promises it will "impress current and future Star Trek fans alike."
The footage will make use of Imax's large screens to give audiences unprecedented crispness and clarity that will put moviegoers in the middle of the on-screen action. Star Trek Into Darkness marks the return of stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin and John Cho as the crew of the Enterprise who must battle a new baddie played by Benedict Cumberbatch. Not much else if known about the plot, but hopefully the first look will help tie us over until its May 17th release.
