A letter from a seventh grader re-ignites the long standing debate between the world's biggest comic book companies - DC and Marvel. An innocent school assignment from a seventh grader named Spencer has once again pitted DC fans against Marvel fans. The letter was posted on Reddit and reveals that Spencer was assigned the task of writing a letter to a company, something many of us probably had to do in school. Spencer decided to send his letter to his favorite comic book company, DC. In addition to revealing his favorite character is Green Arrow, Spencer asked a few questions, including one that many of us comic book movie fans are wondering - "How does DC plan to compete against Marvel movies when Marvel seemingly dominates the live action superhero movie industry?" Excellent question, Spencer! Now, before we get into the debate here, we have to give kudos to DC because they did in fact respond to Spencer's letter and in addition to sending along some comics, they also answered all his questions and this is where the debate begins. In DC's response to the question about how they plan to compete with Marvel, they responded quote "Marvel may have many movies that come out in one year, and the reason for that is they have many different distributors which makes it possible for them to do so. DC Comics has one distributor who is Warner Bros and well we don't like to toot our own horn (well actually we do) our movies by far exceed all of Marvel's in sales." So, is DC correct in saying their films "far exceed" all of Marvel's in sales? Well, it depends how you look at it. If you just take all the DC films that have been released going all the way back to the 1966 Batman movie starring Adam West and the films that are part of Marvel's Cinematic Universe starting with 2008's Iron Man, then yes, DC does in fact win, but the letter specifically mentions that Marvel's films are distributed by other studios, which include Spider-Man, X-Men and the Fantastic Four, among others. If you include those, things look very different. The site Fancy Dress Costumes released an infograph back in 2012 addressing this very issue calculating the domestic box office totals adjusted for inflation. It gave Marvel the win with $5.7 billion over DC's $3.8 billion, but DC took in more per movie. Despite having some questionable numbers for the 1966 Batman movie, the infograph is pretty good, but it does exclude movies like Constantine, V For Vendetta and The Losers, which are based on DC comics and were distributed by Warner Bros. Add those in, and it bumps DC's take to around $4.6 billion adjusted for inflation. Still short, though, of Marvel's $5.7 billion. We could add in movies like Road to Perdition, The League of Extraordinary Gentleman and the two RED movies to help DC's numbers, but they were not distributed by Warner Bros, and the since the letter touted DC as having only one distributor, we think it's only fair to leave them out. Like most of you out there, we love both Marvel and DC and are excited for all the movies coming out, but no matter how you crunch the numbers, DC stating their films "far exceed" all of Marvel's in sales is just not true. So all you Marvel fans can gloat a little...for now...and what better way to gloat than checking out Robert Downey Jr. channeling Tony Stark and taking home multiple People's Choice Awards for Iron Man 3? You can check that out by clicking right here. But what do you think of this debate? Is DC right about outselling Marvel after all?
