A classic character is coming to the live-action world of the Transformers franchise and we’ve got it for you right now. The reveal of a new addition to the Transformers franchise suggests the Autobots could be getting a new leader. With Optimus Prime heading out into space at the end of Age of Extinction, the Autobots could be in the market for a new leader and it looks like that may come in the form of classic fan-favorite, “Hot Rod”. Director Michael Bay took to Twitter to reveal the robot look for the character who was first introduced back in 1986 in The Transformers: The Movie. While Bay has introduced many of the characters that will make up next summer’s The Last Knight before, the introduction of Hot Rod is a big deal to longtime fans. In the 1986 animated movie, Hot Rod is the main protagonist of the film after Optimus Prime is killed by Megatron early on. In that film, Hot Rod acquires the “Matrix of Leadership” and with it he becomes new Autobot leader “Rodimus Prime”. The Matrix of Leadership was introduced in 2009’s Revenge of the Fallen so it’s possible we could see this same scenario play out in the new film. As for Hot Rod’s new look, keeping with Bay’s fondness for making the characters look almost nothing like their cartoon counterparts, the new design drops Hot Rod’s colorful orange, red and yellow look for a darker red and black. It’s not clear what form he’ll take while in disguise, but our best guess will be a Chevy Camaro, similar to Bumblebee. This theory is highlighted by the fact that his history reveals him to be “Bumblebee’s brothers-in-arms”. Similar to his portrayal in the animated movie, Hot Rod is described as brash, slightly arrogant and a protector. His connection to Bumblebee also hints that he could potentially play a role in the Bumblebee spinoff movie currently set for June 8th, 2018. No word yet on which actor will voice the live-action Hot Rod, but something tells us if they wanted to have Judd Nelson reprise his role from the animated movie, he’d probably be available. So, who out there is excited to see Hot Rod join the live-action Transformers franchise and do you think we’ll see him transformed into Rodimus? Share your thoughts in the comments and then click here to find out what we want to see happen in Transformers: The Last Knight when it arrives in theaters on June 23rd. I’m Sinead de Vries, thanks for watching and we’ll see you soon with more movie news!
