Yeehaw is right! Disney has announced today a fourth Toy Story movie is coming in 2017! One of the most popular and profitable animated film franchises of all-time is set to return to theaters and original writer/director John Lasseter will return to helm the sequel. Walt Disney CEO Bob Iger made the announcement during a call to investors saying quote, “John created Toy Story and directed the first two films, and it’s great to have him back directing one of our most valuable properties.” The news comes as a bit of a shock as it has often been said that there were no plans for a fourth film despite Toy Story 3 earning over a billion at the box office back in 2010 and being the highest grossing animated film of all-time until Frozen surpassed it earlier this year. Of course, there’s been plenty of Toy Story to tie us over with a Halloween themed special that debuted in 2013 and several shorts that appeared in front of other Disney and Pixar films. A new special titled, Toy Story That Time Forgot is set to air on ABC on December 2nd. As for the official release date, Disney previously blocked off June 16th, 2017 for an Untitled Pixar movie, so that date will most likely stick. That currently sets Toy Story 4 to potentially go up against two other big animated sequels that month – How To Train Your Dragon 3 and Despicable Me 3. Something tells us we’ll be seeing one or both of those films moving their dates sometime soon. The Toy Story films have always been entertaining and are one of those rare franchises where the sequels are actually better than the original and to find out what other movies we think carry the same distinction go ahead and click here.
