If we've learned anything from Hollywood, never say never, because nothing is official until the movie hits theaters and if The Avengers is any indication, you may not even be safe then. You're probably aware by now that director Roland Emmerich is once again reteaming with his former producing partner Dean Devlin for two sequels to their 1996 hit Independence Day. We know that original cast members Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldblum have been confirmed to return and Emmerich previously stated that Will Smith would not be returning, due to the mega-star stating that he was interested in stepping away from doing big blockbuster movies and Emmerich suggesting they couldn't even afford him anyway. In a recent interview with Digital Spy to promote his film White House Down though, it sounds like Emmerich and Smith may be changing their tunes. Emmerich revealed that he and Smith will be meeting soon to discuss the possibility of a return saying, "Anything can happen". So nothing guaranteed, but at least there's a chance we could see Smith making a return. Another uncertainty regarding the sequel is the release date. Originally planned for 2015, Emmerich suggested a 2016 release seems more likely at this point. Probably a good thing considering how many big blockbuster releases are already set for 2015. And Independence Day isn't the only franchise Emmerich is looking to revive! The director also revealed that he was interested in doing a sequel to Stargate, but didn't think it would work since original actors like Kurt Russell and James Spader look so different now. Instead, plans are in the works to do a sequel as a reboot that would become an all-new trilogy. No word yet on when we might expect a new Stargate to hit theaters, but plans to hire a writer and move forward on the project are expected to happen soon. So do you think an Independence Day sequel would work without Will Smith and who's excited for more Stargate movies?
