FPV cams and HD Cams latency comparison and AOMWay cams reviewed | RCSchim

LOW latency is one of the key factors in having a good experience while flying FPV. Most important if you fly miniquads like they should be flown: in manual / acro mode. ►Video Index in Description!!!
In this mode your eyes / brain needs to process the image from the goggles and give your thumbs the corrections (via the sticks). If you're good at flying this is mostly done from your unconsciousness (way faster) and it jsut works - you get the "flow".
Latency is a handicap in this process and it's similar than the effect alcohol has on your brain: it slows processing down - the "counter-measurements" come too late and are too much...
I first noticed this years back when I flew with Gopro2 liveout (out of being too lazy to integrate dedicated FPV cams to my systems).
For example on takeoff with my first multirotos - I staggerd around and almost crashed. Many untrained FPVers (noobs) might think that this comes from their lack of skillz - while it really is just a bad setup.
Also on miniquads: if you fly close proximity you have to react fast and at the right time - and not too much (to overcompensate and make it even worse). I had this problem while flying my "Trip" quad in the park with the Runcam Sky2 boardcam (which as stated in the video I would have never thought could have that much latency...).
Generally you can say:
Dedicated FPV cams are fast enough (pro pilots might need really low latency - on video as on the radio) but normal people are ok with the 20-40ms cams that are widely sold.
HD cams are NOT suiteable for manual mode flying. Some HDcams are better - but most have at least 100ms - this is only OK for stabilized quads or planes.
New HDcams (like Runcam2) advertise with really low latency (40-60ms) - I will test this and see if you can really fly quads with this.
But latency is only one part - the other one is light handling and "dynamic range" (how good are the dark parts if you also have bright sunlight at the same time).

Fatshark 600tvl Cam (from HK comments):
It is unfortunate that the IR filter is in the lens, and not on the sensor cover glass like most other cameras. If you want to use a wider lens, good luck finding one with an IR filter. If you use a 'normal' lens like those sold by Hobby King, the view through your goggles is psychedelic - WHOA dude, the trees are pink! Apart from this, the camera is OK, and the price is about right for the quality of the image.
(and this actually happend to me when I used another lens!)
►Lenses and FOV (field of view):
2.1 mm lens ~ 158°
2.5 mm lens ~ 147°
2.8 mm lens ~ 130°
3.0 mm lens ~ 127°
3.6 mm lens ~ 92°
►TVL Resolution:
Not sure how much resolution you can really get through to your goggles / screen under best conditions.
My Dominator HDs have 800x600 (so they can handle 600 lines of vertical resolution), It needs to be tested seperatly if 800tvl or more really make a noteable difference...
