Captain Kirk, Spock and the rest of the U.S.S. Enterprise is schedule to enter our galaxy next year but other than that, producer/director J.J. Abrams has been pretty tight lipped about 'Star Trek Into Darkness'. Fortunately Paramount Pictures just released the movie synopsis and it sounds pretty epic.
It is described as follows: 'When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis. With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.'
That is some intense stuff right there! Sounds like we will be in for another action-packed, edge-of-your-seat kind of movie but the description still leaves one major question in the air: Who is the villain? We know that new cast member Benedict Cumberbatch is playing the baddie but who exactly that baddie is we aren't exactly sure.
It was first rumored that Cumberbatch's villainous role would be that of Khan Noonien Singh, but that has since been denied. Then in July, Karl Urban aka Dr. Bone McCoy allegedly revealed that Gary Mitchell would be the baddie, who appeared in the original Star Trek TV series, but that was soon dismissed too. So who knows! We think out of those two, Gary Mitchell is the more likely option since in the show Mitchell absorbs psychic abilities that quickly corrupt him into a power-crazed crewmember.
'Force of terror within their own organization'? Check. 'One man weapon of mass destruction'? Check. 'Friendships will be torn apart'? Check. We will hedge our bets on Cumberbatch playing Gary Mitchell in the sequel but we will find out for sure soon enough.
The trailer and the first NINE minutes of 'Star Trek Into Darkness' will be revealed before 'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey' next month and the movie opens in 2D, 3D and IMAX 3D on May 17, 2013.
So you know our theories, what about you? Think Gary Mitchell will lead the Enterprise crew on 'epic chess game of life or death' or could it be someone or something else. Let us know down below. I'm Aja Dang for Clevver Movies, live long and prosper.
