Japanese Fans Call Godzilla "Fat": First Screening Reactions

Is the world's biggest monster too big for fans in his native land? That's the word from Godzilla fans in Japan who think the new version of the classic movie monster needs to lose a few pounds calling him quote, "an American Fatty". Seems odd to be complaining about the size of a creature who has been an endearing icon for 60 years in large part due to its great size, but who ever said complaining on the internet was supposed to make sense? Godzilla's large size is actually the exact opposite of what many fans complained about the last American version of the character. Many thought the streamlined, T-Rex inspired creation veered too far away from the design of the original creature. Maybe the studio should have just stuck with sticking a guy in a rubber suit and setting him loose on tiny models? That 1998 version of Godzilla went on to be a huge box office disappointment bringing in only $136 million in the US - just a little more than its reported $130 million budget. Of course, that film's poor showing wasn't just about the creature's appearance, but could this new Godzilla's super-sized makeover lead to another box office dud? Probably not, if early screening reactions are any indication. Most who attended the early screening seem to have fairly positive reactions calling it "fantastic" and "visually stunning". Though we won't get full reactions until closer to the film's release, it sounds like it won't be Godzilla's weight that most people are complaining about when it roars into theaters. Turns out director Gareth Edwards is taking a page from the Steven Spielberg's playbook and showing very little of Godzilla in the film -- something Spielberg did with Jaws and Jurassic Park. Edwards admitted that Jurassic Park was a big influence on how he approached the film explaining quote, "[If] you throw everything you can at the screen, you've got nowhere else to go." He went on to say that his goal wasn't to frustrate the audience by holding off on Godzilla's reveal but to tease them, calling it "cinematic foreplay". We'll have to wait until May 16th to see if this cinematic foreplay leaves us feeling satisfied by the time the credits role, but Godzilla isn't the only big summer movie we're excited for and to find out which we'll be standing in line to see this summer, be sure to click right here. So do you think the new Godzilla needs to hit the gym and lose a few pounds and is his weight even an issue if we won't be seeing too much of him anyway?
