That memorable silent movie 'Bolero' sequence in Legion‘s seventh episode wasn’t supposed to be a silent movie sequence.

“Sometimes huge things are done in the editing room,” Noah Hawley told EW’s Dalton Ross at the Comic-Con studio Thursday. “So episode 7 has the silent movie with the cards — that was all added later. When you guys were filming it, you had no idea that I was going to take all the sound out and put the silent movie cards in. That wasn’t in the script.”
And Hawley didn’t know, either; it wasn’t until post-production that he realized taking the sound out of the scene worked well with what was happening in it. “It’s fun, it’s a playful show,” he explained. “I like that about it, that there’s a certain amount of just whimsy to it. … We don’t take ourselves too seriously.”
The interview, above, also features stars Dan Stevens, Rachel Keller, Jean Smart, Aubrey Plaza, Bill Irwin, Jeremie Harris, Amber Midthunder, and executive producers John Cameron and Lauren Shuler Donner joking about how confusing the show can be and remembering their favorite scenes from season 1.
