The cast of next year’s Spider-Man movie gets some major Marvel star power and we’ve got all the details for you! It looks like we won’t have to wait too much longer for Iron Man and Spider-Man to reunite on the big screen. If you were wondering how much of next year’s Spider-Man: Homecoming would tie into the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the answer is a whole bunch! Sources have revealed that Robert Downey Jr. has officially signed on to play “Tony Stark” in next year’s Spider-Man movie. While fans will get a chance to see he and new Spider-Man Tom Holland meet in the upcoming Captain America: Civil War, this will be the first Spider-Man movie where the character will be part of the larger MCU. Marvel president Kevin Feige had previously stated that this new Spider-Man would be firmly established in that universe, but RDJ’s casting definitely cements that point. While Downey Jr is the only confirmed Marvel hero to be featured in the film, others are expected to also appear. Production on Homecoming is set to begin this June with the studio moving quickly on solidifying its cast. In addition to Downey Jr and Holland, the film will star Maria Tomei as “Aunt May”, Zendaya in an unknown lead role and most recently The Grand Budapest Hotel’s Tony Revolori as Peter Parker’s high school nemesis and One Life To Live’s Laura Harrier in what The Wrap describes as “a significant role”. Michael Keaton was also in early talks to play the film’s villain, but word now is that he is no longer in contention and Marvel and Sony are now searching for a new actor to court. It’s still unclear who the villain will be, but Feige had previously teased that it would not be one that had been utilized in the previous films.
