#7 - Soldiers In The Ice
The terrifying mangled skeletons pictured here are just two of 10,000 men. During the first World War, there was a mountain range that took a lot of soldier lives. During World War I, both the Italians and the Austro-Hungarian forces were fighting each other. But it wasn’t only the battle that cost lives. There was an avalanche that took more lives than all the warfare in the area put together. The devastating avalanche happened on December 13th, 1916 and it claimed the lives of 10,000 men, most of which are still buried underneath the snow.
#6 - Another Dinosaur Hand
When people got a look at the crazy object in this picture, they immediately thought that it was a long forgotten dinosaur hand unearthed from somewhere spectacular. There are other people who joked that it was a Deathclaw hand from the popular video game series, Fallout. Even more people joked that this is one of the hands needed to unlock a gate in the video game Skyrim. The thing you see here is actually something entirely different than all of the guesses. It turns out you can actually eat the thing you see here, and that’s because it’s just a funny looking horseradish. Ya, we were disappointed too.
#5 - Skulls Within Skulls
The staked skull pictured here isn’t even the worst part of this scary discovery. In 2009, a group of archaeologists discovered a few skulls that were over 8,000 years old during a dig in Sweden. While most of the skulls, like this one, were found with stakes in them, all of them were found to have fragments of another, different human skull inside. How creepy is that?
#4 - The Bog People
Frighteningly enough, there have been over a thousand “bog bodies” found in the sphagnum bogs in northwestern Europe. The elements in the bog preserved the bodies so well that you can clearly see the clothing they wore, their facial features and sometimes even facial hair! This is a picture of one of the bog bodies that can be seen at the Museum of Prehistory in Aarhus. This is a photo of a man that was so well preserved, you can still see his facial hair, in fact, it looks as if he is just sleeping, which in itself is rather creepy.
#3 - Screaming Mummies
Although the thought that they were tortured has since been changed, stumbling upon a screaming mummy like the one in this picture has to take away your ability to sleep soundly from now until the end of time. At first we thought that these people just met their untimely death in the worst possible way, through torture, but that wasn’t exactly the case. Although some of these mummies were probably tortured, that’s not the reason they look like they’re screaming with their mouths hanging open. Apparently, if you don’t bind the jaw, the jaw will drop during the decaying process. If their jaws had been tied shut, we would have only found regular mummies and not these terrifying ones, like the twisted one in this picture.
#2 - A Sewer Full Of Babies
This is a story that will keep you up at night; it’s that horrifying. Back in the late 80’s, a group of archaeologists from Harvard were digging through a sewage system in the ancient city of Ashkelon. What they found was the remains of over 100 infants, one of which you can see in this picture here. The sewage system was underneath a Roman brothel, and all of the bodies were at least a week old. Since the bodies were mostly male, archaeologists assumed girls were more favorable to their mothers, as they could grow up and join the brothel trade.
#1 - A Tower of Human Skulls
Back in 1521, a Spanish soldier named Andres de Tapia wrote about an Aztec temple that was created to worship the Aztec god of the sun, war, and human sacrifice. In the account of his findings, he describes a large tower made into the shape of a theater made out of both regular stone and limestone. On the tops of these stone “shelves” were tens of thousands of human skulls all on display. No one knew the exact location of which Andres spoke of so long ago, that is, until now. As of the summer of 2017, archaeologists claim that they have found this ancient Aztec site and they knew because they found one of the racks of skulls that is believed to measure about 200 feet in diameter, you can see part of it in this image here. A lot of the skulls have become encased in the lime since they have been forgotten for so long. It’ll probably be awhile before we have all the details of the findings after the excavation, but it’s pretty cool discovery that is absolutely terrifying.
