The globe-trotting Far Cry franchise has racked up more air miles than the Sultan of Brunei’s private jet, landing this time in the Northwestern United States, in Montana, in a place called Hope County, where the locals might be farming their land in peace if there weren't a Far Cry going on.
Instead, a well-armed doomsday cult by the name of Eden's Gate has the population under the thumb, led by Far Cry villain du jour Father Joseph Seed, who you as deputy sheriff have been sent to arrest.
Far Cry 5's deputy sheriff protagonist is, for the first time, a customised character, in a story campaign that is, for the first time, wholly open to co-op play.
Add to that an animal taming mechanic a la Far Cry Primal, and a bundle of flying vehicles to get around turbulent Hope County, and you've got the beginnings of a whole new Far Cry.
