The 70th annual Golden Globe nominations were just announced this morning and we have your movie scorecard rundown. Steven Spielberg's Lincoln took the lead with 7 total nominations, followed by both Argo and Dejango Unchained with 5 nods overall. The category for Best Motion Picture Drama had a lot of strong contenders, which included heavy hitters like "Lincoln," "Argo," "Django Unchained," "Life of Pi" and "Zero Dark Thirty." Typically, the SAG and Golden Globe nominations help to create buzz and momentum for the Oscar contenders, so Dejango Unchained and Life of Pi had the most to gain by being nominated in this category today as they were not really recognized in yesterday's SAG Award nominations.
Now, if you're an animation fan, I think you're going to be happy with many of this years nods, and there weren't too many surprises here with, Brave, Frankenweenie, Hotel Transylvannia, Rise of the Guardians, and Wreck-It Ralph all in the running.
One of of the toughest categories this year is for best director, as we have some extremely big names including Katheryn Bigelo, Ben Affleck, Ang Lee, Steven Spielberg, and Quentin Tarantino in the batch. This is Affleck's first Golden Globe nomination for directing, as he's previously directed both The Town and Gone Baby Gone. And Katheryn Bigelo has all the girl power this year, and I kinda hope she wins. If you remember she was nominated for a Golden Globe in 2010 for Hurt Locker but lost to her ex husband, James Cameron for Avatar; to which she went on to take home an oscar and beat him in the same academy award category.
As far as nominee surprises go, I think the biggest one was last springs comedic drama, SALMON FISHING IN THE YEMEN. It scored several nominations including Best Motion Picture in Comedy or a Musical with Emily Blunt taking a nod for her performance as Best Actress in the movie as well as Ewan McGregor for best performance by an actor.
The 70th annual Golden Globes will air live on Sunday, January 13th, and for a full list of nominees check out the link down below. The golden globe nominations are usually a sign of what we can expect from Oscar season, and it looks like there are a lot of your favorites out there, but we want to know who you think will take home the trophies for 2012. Do you favor the Golden Globe nominations over the SAG Award nominations? Make sure you give us your picks down below, and tweet us over at ClevverMovies. We always love hearing from you there too. I'm Erin White, see you next time.
