Director, Edgar Wright talks Ant Man, and why the villain Ultron wont be in the script. In the Marvel comics, Ant-Man actually created the big bad robot named Ultron, who we now know will be the main baddie in Joss Whedon's sequel, The Avengers: Age of Ultron, which hits theaters May 1st, 2015. But Marvel's phase three kicks off with Ant-Man AFTER that, in November of 2015. So, what's up with that? Well, director Edgar Wright sat down with the Huffington Post and basically said that setting up the story of a huge superhero AND a huge villain inside of one movie isn't really the most successful approach. He said quote, "To sort of set up what Ant-Man does is enough for one movie. It's why I think "Iron Man" is extremely successful because it keeps it really simple-- I think why sometimes, superhero films fail [is] because they have to set up a hero and a villain at the same time. And sometimes it's unbalanced". Wright also said that these comic characters come with 50 or more years of history, and that in an origins movie there should be a more narrow focus, in order to streamline a great story, since you have to fit it all within a hundred minutes or so. So, it sounds like there wont really be an Ant Man/Ultron connection, but what about some of the other source material from Ant Man's story? Well, Wright will likely stick to as much as possible, but he did say that because Ant-Man is one of the lessor known characters in the universe, he will take advantage of having more of a creative license to make a good movie versus trying to replicate Ant Mans story perfectly. But if you're a fanboy, don't let that last statement scare you. Marvel President Kevin Feige told MTV several months back that the only reason that he is making Ant Man is because of Edgar Wright's perspective of Ant-Mans origins. And if you are still lacking in confidence, I suggest you head out to see Wrights new sci-fi comedy, The Worlds End which opens on August 23rd, because you will get a great idea of the kind of director he is, and I feel confident that you will be very, very pleased. Stay tuned to ClevverMovies because we will be posting a review of The Worlds End very soon. So, what are your thoughts on Edgar Wrights thoughts on Ant Man!? Do you think it's ok for a director to take some creative liberties when adapting the comics for the big screen? Sound off below, or send us your tweets about as well on twitter at ClevverMovies.
