When talking about fast, nimble and enjoyable micro quads, your mind will most probably go straight to 2S, 3S or even 4S builds, with screamingly high KV motors and expensive gear.
Inspired by the recent introduction of the Micro Class in the MultiGP leagues, I started planning out for a lightweight brushed build, strictly based on 1S batteries and composed of easily found hardware. I am a fan of micros and wanted to see how "good" a 1S quad can be in the air.
The must haves were the following:
- Frame: small footprint, compatible with 65mm props
- Motors: cheap, powerful and reliable
- F/C: all-in-one, including receiver and OSD
- VTx: switchable from 25mW to 200mW
The weight goal was initially 36,5 grams and required some tricks to reach.
After various combinations and several test builds, I finally assembled the most enjoyable of them all, that ticks all checkboxes and survives some crashes as well.
Starting at 36,3 grams (dry) and according to my motor/prop static thrust tests, this build has a power to weight ratio of 3,39:1 (using 300mah nanotech 1S batteries).
With a few touches here and there it easily drops down to 35,5 grams (dry), with a 3,45:1 power to weight ratio!
And if you opt for a light 25mW AiO FPV combo instead of the 600TVL board camera and the switchable VTx, you can easily exceed 3,5:1 power to weight ratio..
These numbers may not seem much, especially when compared to powerful 3" and 4" builds.
But the miniscule weight and size, combined with the convenience of 1S batteries, make for an extremely enjoyable and fast micro brushed quad.
This is BUILD LOG: Ultralight "MicroGP" 1S brushed quad (MultiGP Micro Class build). Let's go!
