ReCore is an action-adventure shooter game played from a third-person view, centering around Joule and her robotic companions, whose function is to aid her in combat and puzzle solving; these six types of creatures are amenable to improvement, should players find the blueprints and materials to do so, which grants upgrades to their attack and defense. Players can level up Joule's weapons and vitality. Ranged weapons have four kinds of ammunition distinguished by color, each with a purpose to take down the enemy with a matching color. Furthermore, if one of Joule's companions matches the color of an enemy, it will thus inflict more damage in combat. Joule also wields a grappling hook that she uses to navigate across platforms and extract her enemies' energy cores. Removing a power core from one location to another and high-flying environmental challenges represent the puzzle solving.
Story
Far Eden was one of many planets discovered outside of our solar system during the first decades of the 21st century, but while Far Eden was relatively close to Earth in terms of cosmic distance, it was still too many light years away for human life to make the journey. During the 2020s however, Earth had been ravaged by a terrible disease called Dust Devil and despite a concerted global effort, led by an organization known as the Mandate, were unable to manage outbreak after outbreak of this deadly contagion. With promising data from probes, Mandate launched a series of missions to a distant planet - Far Eden. First, thousands of Corebots - robot assistants built to aid in the building of Far Eden - were sent to build atmospheric processing facilities across the planet before a first group of colonists that included Joule would arrive. These colonists would hibernate in cryo-sleep for the next 200 years while the terraforming process finished, in the hopes that when Joule and the other Far Eden personnel awoke, they would step out onto a garden world with blue skies, water, and trees, but now when Joule and her Corebot companion, Mack, awake, they discover that the terraforming machines have failed, most of the Corebots have gone rogue, and the other human colonists are nowhere to be found. The only contact Joule has with Earth is this centuries-old message from her Father.
