If you thought Hollywood wasn’t devoid of any original ideas just yet, this may change your mind. The Wall Street Journal reveals that a movie based on the game Tetris is in the works. Yes, that game where you move different shaped blocks around is not only set to become a movie, but it’s being called a quote “very big, epic sci-fi movie” from the film’s producer, Larry Kasanoff. This isn’t the first game Kasanoff has turned into a movie. Back in 1995, he helped bring Mortal Kombat to the big screen and has since worked on movies featuring the Bionicle and LEGO toys and directed an animated film called Foodfight that featured brand mascots like Charlie Tuna, Mr. Clean and Mrs. Butterworth. Yeah, that exists. If you grew up in the 80’s, you’re very aware of the cultural impact Tetris had. It became the first entertainment software to be exported to the US from the Soviet Union back in 1984 at the height of the cold war and thanks to Nintendo’s Game Boy, it became one of the most popular video games of all-time selling over 170 million copies worldwide. Despite it’s popularity though, there’s absolutely no storyline, so Threshold is obviously hoping the name alone will sell tickets. If the movie does end up getting made and is actually successful Kasanoff thinks Tetris has quote, “the canvas for location-based entertainment based on the epicness.” We have absolutely no idea what that means and something tells us neither does he, but we wish him all the best.
