The filmmakers behind the X-Men franchise explain the new timeline and we’re breaking it all down right now on Clevver Newsfeed! If you’re still confused about the X-Men universe timeline after the events of Days of Future Past this story is for you. There’s no question that Days of Future Past shook up the X-Men universe in monumental ways, but there’s still a lot of confusion about exactly what that means. So much so that when a group of reporters had a chance to speak with director Bryan Singer and writer Simon Kinberg on the set of this summer’s X-Men: Apocalypse, explaining the new timeline was one of their biggest questions. Singer and Kinberg both confirmed that Wolverine travelling back to 1973 in Days of Future Past created an entirely new timeline which erased the events of the original X-Men as well as X2, The Last Stand and even X-Men Origins, Wolverine, but they don’t quite agree about the extent. According to Kingberg, the new timeline isn’t moving toward the Patrick Stewart version of “Professor Xavier” and his fellow X-Men that we saw in the original trilogy, but is instead heading toward the future that Wolverine woke up to at the end of Days of Future Past. While he does admit that things like another time travel storyline could alter things, that future is what the films are ultimately headed toward. While he does admit that you can’t fully change the course of time, you can divert it a little and that’s what they did meaning that characters that died in the original trilogy could end up surviving and ones that survived could end up being killed. Singer, on the other hand, sees the new timeline a little differently and doesn’t think the films are necessarily headed toward the future that Wolverine woke up to. Singer explained that he fought hard to include the scene in Days of Future Past in which Hank McCoy reveals that he invented a way to record television. That scene, which he calls “The Tivo Scene”, was meant to show that no matter what you do to the river of time, it eventually ends up back where it was supposed to. As far as Singer is concerned, the original trilogy may not be as erased as some think and that post-apocalyptic future that Wolverine and the other X-Men fought hard to avoid could still happen. For now though, the X-Men movies and films like Deadpool, Wolverine and Gambit will be taking place in the post-Days of Future Past timeline that may or may not be headed to a happy ending, depending on who you ask. While the future of the ¬X-Men universe remains a mystery, we do know we can look forward to seeing how it all plays out when X-Men: Apocalypse lands in theaters on May 27th. So, does this clear up any confusion about the new timeline or are you still trying to wrap your head around it? Head down to the comments and tell us what you think and then click here to find out what 7 things we think need to happen in Apocalypse.
