Deadline reports that the Star Wars newcomer is one of several actresses on the short list for Warner Brothers and MGM’s planned reboot of the Tomb Raider franchise. A new Tomb Raider film has been in the works for quite some time now, gaining plenty of traction thanks to the video game’s resurgence with two massively popular back-to-back games, 2013’s Tomb Raider and last year’s Rise of the Tomb Raider. This combined with a fresh desire to see women in some franchise leading roles has created the perfect opportunity to reboot Lara Croft and allow her to rightfully rejoin the ranks of her action-star brethren.
The role hasn’t been seen on the silver screen since Angelina Jolie’s now-iconic take on the character with 2002’s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and 2003’s The Cradle of Life. While the films were somewhat silly, they stayed true to the character from the video games from which they were adapted, letting Jolie display her skills double wielding guns and clearing rooms of baddies. But now the mantle is open for another young actress to take it and Daisy Ridley’s name is main one being thrown around at the moment.
This isn’t too far-fetched – she more than proved her chops in The Force Awakens and Rey had more than a few things in common with her co-star Harrison Ford’s Han Solo character and both of those characters certainly share a few things in common with one of his other iconic roles, Indiana Jones. It’s not much a stretch to see the similarities between Jones and Croft and based on what little we’ve seen of Ridley, it could definitely be a solid fit.
But while Daisy is an excellent choice, she’s definitely on the young side for what we’ve seen of Lara Croft previously. But this could be an overall attempt to tell Lara’s origins possibly from the perspective of the extremely well-received video game reboots of the series that have seen a younger Lara pitted against some pretty aggressive survival situations and terrifying secret societies. The first game had a very Arrow-ish feel to it for those familiar with the TV show. But if we had to make our pick, we’d go with Agent Carter’s Hayley Atwell who captures the same amount of charming wit combined with ass-kicking abilities that make Lara such a great character. Beyond Hayley, other actresses who could take up the mantle could possibly include Emily Blunt, Gemma Arterton, Alexandra Daddario, or even Mission Impossible 5’s show stealer, Rebecca Ferguson. But these are just our suggestions: beyond Daisy’s name, Deadline’s report didn’t mention any other actresses. The report was also clear that these are very early talks and nothing has been set in stone yet – Daisy has a few more Star Wars movies to make after all.
