Buy the Seagate drive we use to upgrade our PS4 in this video, and help support Digital Foundry (we get a small percentage of any sale):
Let's be honest - 500GB in the new wave of consoles just isn't good enough. We need more storage and this is the cheapest way we could find to upgrade PlayStation 4 to 2TB - buying a Seagate USB 3.0 expansion drive, ripping it from the enclosure and installing it in the console! Xbox One owners have it easy - keep the drive in the enclosure and just plug it into the USB port.
When upgrading your PS4, you need to download the full system software from here:
Place the PS4UPDATE.PUP file into a folder called UPDATE and place that into a folder called PS4. Copy the PS4 folder to a USB flash drive formatted to either FAT32 or exFAT. Once the new drive is in your PS4, power it up with the flash drive in the USB socket and follow on-screen instructions.
Note: Seagate has produced a 2015 version of the expansion drive tested here. The good news is that the same Samsung HDD is inside and it works just fine in PS4. The bad news is that the caddy is a little more difficult to open. Read our full article for details:
