Rio de Janeiro is the second largest city of Brazil and South America, behind São Paulo, and the third largest metropolitan area in South America, behind São Paulo and Buenos Aires. Rio de Janeiro is famous for its natural settings, its Carnival celebrations, samba and other music, and hotel-lined tourist beaches, such as Copacabana and Ipanema. Some of the most famous landmarks in addition to the beaches include the giant statue of Jesus, known as Christ the Redeemer ('Cristo Redentor') atop Corcovado mountain, named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World; Sugarloaf mountain with its cable car.
This video covers my one day tour of the city. We rode the train to the 2329 foot summit of Corcovado Mountain. It was sunny on top and we got a nice look at the famous 125 foot statue of Jesus atop its peak, entitled Cristo Redentor or "Christ the Redeemer". Unfortunately the view was very limited and obstructed by clouds. Next we drove into downtown Rio and visited the cone-shaped Metropolitan Cathedral. Next we rode the cable cars to the top of Sugarloaf Mountain. Sugarloaf Mountain is a peak situated in the mouth of Guanabara Bay on a peninsula that sticks out into the Atlantic Ocean and rises 1,299 feet above sea-level. The video concludes with views of Ipanema Beach.
