Director J.J. Abrams opens up about that new Star Wars lightsaber, how much of the film was actually shot in Imax and what his involvement will be in future films. On the red carpet at the Visual Effects Society Awards where he was given the Visionary Award, Star Wars: The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams was tightlipped as usual about any specifics when it came to the highly anticipated first film in the new trilogy, but he did reveal to Collider that the new “hilted” lightsaber that debuted in the first trailer was probably the most debated and talked about aspect of the new film so far saying quote, “I cannot tell you how many contradictory emails I have received from people who have both defended it with unbelievably detailed graphics…I’ve gotten things that are nuts, and I’ve gotten people who’ve shown how it’ll kill you and how it doesn’t make any sense. It’s been the funniest thing to see the arguments that have developed over this thing.” He went on to point out that a lot of the debate that has gone on had already been discussed between him and his team when the idea first spawned from a sketch. In regards to the previously announced Imax footage that was shot, Abrams revealed that there will only be one sequence in the film that was shot with Imax cameras and it’s not a ton of footage, but he did say what fans will get will be good. Of course, one issue that a lot of fans had with the prequels was an overuse of CGI, but according to Abrams, that won’t be an issue with the new film. Though there will still be an enormous amount of CG effects, he maintained that it was important that they build as many sets as they could to give the film a tangible, authentic quality that allowed moviegoers to believe the world they are creating actually existed. As for future films, Abrams confirmed that Looper director Rian Johnson would at least be working on Episode 8 and though he won’t be behind the camera, Abrams will remain on as an executive producer. While accepting the Visionary Award, Abrams thanked Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy for giving him the opportunity to direct the film saying quote, “Spending the last two years in the world of lightsabers and tie fighters has been absolutely challenging and a dream come true.” Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens in theaters on December 18th, 2015 and to find out what 7 things we think need to happen in the film, go ahead and click right here.
