A third G.I. Joe movie is on its way and it looks like it will feature a lot more of The Rock. Variety reports that Shooter & Lethal Weapon 4 writer Jonathan Lemkin has been hired to write the screenplay for G.I. Joe 3 and it will focus on Dwayne Johnson's character "Roadblock". Johnson was introduced in last year's G.I. Joe Retaliation, which was an attempt to somewhat reboot the franchise after the critical and financial disappointment of the first film. Retaliation actually ended up making less than the first film in the US, but did well oversees, bringing in over $370 million worldwide, enough for the studio to greenlight a 3rd film. In addition to Johnson, co-star Adrianne Palicki will also return as "Lady Jaye". Other cast members are expected to return and new characters will be introduced, but nothing has been confirmed just yet. Last year, Retaliation director Jon M. Chu told Collider that Bruce Willis would also be returning as the original Joe, but Variety reports that Chu is not currently attached to return to the director chair, so that may no longer be the case. The current plan is for G.I. Joe 3 to go into production sometime next year for an as yet specified release date in 2016. For those of you hoping for a GI Joe/Transformers crossover movie, it looks like we'll have to wait a bit longer for that to happen. Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura recently told Screen Rant that, despite the studio being enthusiastic about the idea, there have been no official talks of any possible crossover saying something like that probably won't happen unless both franchises start losing momentum. He did say the idea for G.I. Joe 3 is one of the best ideas for a sequel he's ever seen and thinks fans will be "really, really happy".
