While riding on a long-distance train one time, The Bearded Man mused: “How would my life have been different if I had listened to everything my grandma told me?” The first obvious answer is that it would have been a lot better. He wouldn’t have smoked that first cigarette, and he wouldn’t have been kicked out of that club for drunk and disorderly conduct. He wouldn’t have made a lot of the stupid mistakes that plagued him throughout his younger years. The second most obvious answer is that his life would have been a lot worse. He wouldn’t have bungee jumped off a bridge “just because his friends did”, and he probably would have married the first half decent girl and job that came his way. Of course, there’s a third answer still: that he wouldn’t have thought it was the end of the world when things didn’t go his way. He wouldn’t have panicked at every little hiccup. He wouldn’t have been so quick to judge other people, and he’d have realized a lot sooner that we’re all human. Of course, The Bearded Man’s grandma might be old enough to know better, but hey, once even she was just like you and me.
