Destiny was actually teased in Bungie's earlier game Halo 3: ODST, three years before the game was even announced. In the game you can find a billboard that shows Earth, a floating white sphere and the phrase "Destiny Awaits".

Destiny's beta, available to those that pre-ordered the game, lasted for nine days and racked up over 6.5 Million players creating characters in the world, the largest in the studio's history.

During the story in the game's alpha, your personal Ghost (voiced by Peter Dinklage) spots an enemy Hive Wizard and with a delivery unsuiting of such an acclaimed actor, he exclaims "That wizard came from the moon!". Once a joke, Bungie has now embraced it, even turning it into a shirt you can wear to commemorate an awkward bit of writing.
