The holiday surprises are coming early this year for X-Men Fans! Bryan Singer tweets a message that hints that a brand new X-Men movie is on it's way. What did we ever do before twitter you guys! Bryan Singer has taken to his twitter page to send this message to fans:" #Xmen #Apocalypse 2016!" Seems like a very simple tweet, but these two words and a year make for huge news! Fox confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that May 27th 2016 is in fact the release date for a brand new X-Men film. And Singer's tweet also likely means that the next film will incorporate one of the X-Men's biggest foes, Apocalypse and could be drawing from the storyline of the X-Men comic Age of Apocalypse. The villain, Apocalypse is one of the world's first mutants and is an adamant believer in survival of the fittest, and is determined to rid the world of weak beings so that the strong can thrive. He's virtually immortal, really smart, and has a slew of other powers including teleportation and psychic abilities. And I think it goes without saying that he's a pretty nasty guy, and has been known to turn mutants into his horsemen. And while Apocalypse has been an X-Men villain in many comics, the Age of Apocalypse storyline from the 90's is one of the most beloved by X-Men fans, and it mostly likely will serve as the source material for the new movie. In that comic there was mutant time travel (similar to what we will see Wolverine do in Singers upcoming Days of Future Past) which altered the historical timeline so much that all of the existing characters would go through drastic physical changes, and all new characters appear in the world as a result. And through all of this (and specifically in the altered universe) one of the biggest X-Men villains ever, Apocalypse, starts to cause some serious problems for mutants as he is ruling the world. Now, with all of this time travel going on, it actually gives the studio a chance to get creative with which characters they will want to come back. And we will definitely get a better sense as to what singer has planned for the new movie, once we see how Days of Future past ends on May 23rd 2014. Now, it is also worth mentioning that Fantastic Four "rebooter" and X-Men: Days of Future Past writer Simon Kinberg has just signed a three year deal with Fox to expand both of those properties into interwoven franchises similar to how Marvel has done for their properties. Kinberg told THR quote I have a lot of ideas on how to built those brands and do what everybody is thinking of these days. I want to be able to build stories over multiple movies." So, how excited are you all to see a new X-Men movie with Apocalypse as the villain? And what are your thoughts on an interwoven X-Men universe?
