Tomorrowland Plot Compared To Harry Potter

It’s 2014, y’all. The future is now – we have touch screen phones that can video chat, we have vending machines that let you choose any flavor to mix in any soda, we have freaking clouds that store our digital information…albeit there are some bugs to work out…but the future is now and it’s great. But Disney and director Brad Bird think we might have become complacent with our future of convenience and they believe there’s still a better tomorrow out there and they’re bringing it to us with Disney’s new film, Tomorrowland. Not much has been known about the mysterious film being helmed by Brad Bird, bringer of some of the best animated movies to date like The Iron Giant, The Incredibles, Ratatouille and most recently his first live action film, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, but new insight into the film’s premise, written by Bird and Lost creator Damon Lindelof, has shed some bright, new light on the future-scope film. Following the reignited theme of space in films today and the idea of the last great frontier being lost to apathy, Tomorrowland follows star Britt Robertson as Casey, a bright and optimistic teen bursting with scientific curiosity as she finds herself in the not to distant future observing the ever-dying space program. When Casey comes in possession of a mysterious lapel pin that reveals a vision of a different and better land, she begins a quest to discover what she has seen. This leads her to co-star George Clooney, playing a nostalgic, jaded former boy-genius named Frank who isn’t too willing to reveal his knowledge of the pin or Tomorrowland, a place described as somewhere between space and time. The story sounds interesting enough, with plenty of room to make commentary on the apathy of humans today and our inability to push the limits of space exploration, while letting audiences know the future can be changed if we want and there’s more out there to be done. There’s certainly a Harry Potter-air to the idea – a seemingly normal dreamer teen finds herself enamored with a whole new magical world, one we all know is out there and Lindelof describes it just that way telling EW quote, “She is a Muggle who accidentally wanders across Platform 9 ¾ and sees something she probably shouldn’t have.” Bird adds on with, “At first when she experiences this thing, she’s not sure if it’s real or not. It’s kind of like being hit by a dream and not sure whether the dream was a dream or real.” The theme closely follows the standard set by Walt Disney himself when he launched Disneyland and the theme park’s famous Tomorrowland section where the film’s name is derived from. Disney dubbed Tomorrowland, “A vista into a world of wondrous ideas, signifying Man's achievement. A step into the future, with predictions of constructed things to come. Tomorrow offers new frontiers in science, adventure and ideals.” Beyond the plot summary and idea that the creators are pulling from every page in the classic sci-fi book, we’re left sitting here like Casey, knowing something great is out there, but having to wait to make the discovery which comes May 22nd 2015.
