In this video I explain the benefits of different types of helical antennas. I highly recommend trying a directional antenna if you have never used one before.
For long range WiFi, there are many USB devices that have external RPSMA antenna ports. Screw the helical onto one of these and you can pull WiFi from coffee shops in a parking lot nearly a mile away (and yes, I have done this).
