A new Mummy is coming and we’ve got your first look right now! Production on next year’s The Mummy reboot hit the streets of London over the weekend and with it our first look at its ancient queen. In less than a year we will see the official launch of Universal’s movie monster shared universe that will begin with The Mummy. The film is set to star Tom Cruise as a modern day soldier on the hunt for an ancient mummy queen who is awakened after a millennia. Sofia Boutella, who played Samuel L. Jackson’s henchman in last year’s Kingsman: The Secret Service and will star in this month’s Star Trek Beyond plays the new mummy and was spotted over the weekend shooting a scene on the streets of London in full costume. While her costume will likely be enhanced with visual effects before the film arrives in theaters on June 9th, there’s no denying she’s playing a mummy. In addition to the traditional tattered bandages, Boutella also has what looks to be tattoos across her body and face and is carrying a curved dagger. In the scene, Boutella is spotted brandishing the dagger as large wind machines blow debris and extras run for cover. In addition to Boutella and Cruise, the film is set to star Annabelle Wallis, Jake Johnson, Courtney B. Vance and Russell Crowe as “Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde”. While a Universal Movie Monster Shared Universe was teased in the end credits of 2014’s Dracula Untold, The Mummy will be the first of several films planned. In addition to The Mummy, the studio has The Invisible Man starring Johnny Depp currently set for April 13th, 2018, The Wolf Man with Dwayne Johnson rumored to star, as well as updated versions of The Bride of Frankenstein, The Creature from the Black Lagoon and a new Van Helsing movie. So, what do you think of Sofia Boutella as the new “Mummy” and which upcoming Universal Movie Monster film are you most looking forward to?
