Ryan Reynolds Talks Deadpool Leaked Footage & R-Rating

You might be excited for the upcoming Deadpool movie coming out next year, but there’s a good chance you’re not as excited as Ryan Reynolds. Fans have been clamoring for years to get Fox to greenlight a standalone film featuring our favorite Merc with a Mouth in proper fashion and it’s been no surprise that Ryan has been behind a lot of the push, but now that fans have gotten their perfect casting for their favorite underdog film, they’re starting to wonder how the film will play out; will we get the R-rating? Is the test footage how the film will look? How will Deadpool compare to other superhero films? Well, Ryan is opening up about the film and some of his answers have us more excited than Wade Wilson with a chimichanga. Currently in prep for Deadpool, Ryan has been on the promotion trail for his Sundance drama Mississippi Grind and his upcoming dark comedy The Voices and of course interviewers aren’t wasting any time squeezing in a few Deadpool questions including where that leaked test footage came from. According to Ryan, it would have been him leaking the footage had he known the outcome. Speaking to YahooMovies Reynolds revealed that several years ago he and Deadpool director Tim Miller debated leaking the footage themselves to get a push for the film, but no one, including himself, ever got the courage to do it. According to Ryan, a Fox employee filmed the footage on his iPhone and once that leaked online, someone hacked into the production company’s hard drives and leaked the HD version that’s been circulating online since. Luckily for all of us, things worked out and, according to Reynolds, Fox’s decision to greenlight the movie was based entirely off the leaked footage and fan’s overwhelmingly positive reaction to it. As for the film, Reynolds says he and Miller now have the opportunity to create the movie they’ve always wanted to. When asked about whether Miller can handle the job as a first time director, Reynolds told Collider, “[He’s] always been the right guy. He’s always, you know, shown nothing but a fierce loyalty to the canon of Deadpool and that’s the thing you look for first and foremost, a guy that is always wanting to push a little bit farther.” Now, does that mean fans will get the R-rating that we all know is the only true way to do justice to a Wade Wilson epic? Ryan played coy, telling Collider he doesn’t want to spoil anything, but they hope so. Speaking more about the subject, Ryan used the film’s unique budget – one that significantly lower than most superhero films - to detail how the film will differentiate itself from the typical Marvel and DC, telling MTV News, “Necessity is the mother of invention.” Obviously this means the crew will have to get fancy for special effects tricks, but considering Miller runs the special effects studio responsible for the test footage, he’ll probably figure it out. Of course, a low budget February release means the studio might be a little more lenient and take risks in terms of subject matter because they won’t be as concerned with getting a typical superhero movie budget back from the box office which can only be achieved through the widest audiences possible. So we may or may not end up getting our R-rated Deadpool movie, but either way, the shear excited in Ryan’s voice tells us he’s going to put his all into it and a 100% Ryan Reynolds PG13 Deadpool is better than no Deadpool at all.
