5 X Men Characters That Deserve Standalone Movies BEFORE Gambit

Channing Tatum shares some details about his plans for "Gambit" and it has us thinking we have a few better ideas. As I'm sure you've heard by now, Channing Tatum is close to finalizing his deal to take on the role of fan favorite mutant "Gambit" in an upcoming X-Men movie. Many people assumed that would involve him being introduced in 2016's X-Men: Apocalypse, but it sounds like Channing has some very different ideas for the character. In an interview with MTV, Channing explained that current talks are for him to do a standalone Gambit movie first before joining the ranks of the X-Men saying quote, "We've talked about it being a standalone, first, and actually trying to change the 'hero, superhero movie.' Because Gambit is not your typical hero. He's a thief. He walks on the gray. I'm hoping we can change it a little bit, and then ultimately feather into the other ones." With so many great X-Men characters to choose from, this got us thinking that introducing Channing as Gambit in a standalone movie just doesn't feel quite right. Don't get us wrong, we love Gambit and we love Channing, but it feels like he should earn his place in the X-Men Cinematic Universe before getting the chance to step up to the big leagues and get his own movie. So with that in mind, we're naming 5 characters that deserve to get their own movies before Channing. Our first pick is a no-brainer and that is of course Deadpool. Fans have been eagerly awaiting a Deadpool movie for years and we are constantly being teased that it's close to happening. If Fox wants to "change the superhero movie" with a "not your typical hero", Deadpool is it. The "Merc with a Mouth" may have been butchered in X-Men Origins Wolverine, but that is exactly the reason we deserve a standalone movie to make things right. It would be action packed, funny and definitely not your typical superhero movie. Next on our list is Storm. It's no secret that there's a major lack of female superheroes on the big screen and the few that have gotten their own films have not been particularly good. A petition for Oscar winner Lupita Nyong'o to play a young Storm has us thinking that a Storm origin story could be just what we need to fill that void. We're talking about a character that went from being an orphan stealing on the streets of Cairo in order to survive to becoming worshipped as a goddess. Storm has definitely been underutilized in the X-Men films and a fresh take on this character could make for a great standalone movie. Another character that was grossly underutilized in the X-Men films is Cyclops. Relegated to being simply an obstacle in Wolverine's quest to land Jean Grey in the movies, Cyclops is one of the founding members of the X-Men and the team's leader. He was also orphaned as a child and struggled with his powers growing up. Fans should get the chance to see why Cyclops was made the leader of this band of mutant superheroes and a standalone movie would be a perfect way to make that happen. Fourth on our list is Mystique. There's been recent talk of a standalone movie and we understand a lot of that talk has to do with the fact that Mystique is currently being played by Jennifer Lawrence, one of the hottest stars in Hollywood right now. That definitely doesn't hurt her chances for a standalone movie, but seeing how the character has developed in First Class and Days of Future Past, we're interested to see more of Mystique and her struggle to determine which path she ultimately chooses to become -- a hero or villain. And our final pick may be a controversial one, but it's Quicksilver. If I pulled a Days of Future Past and travelled back in time to the beginning of the year when we got our first look at the character and said I'd want to see him in a solo movie, I'd think Kitty Pryde had fried my brain. And sure, I may still be giddy about that awesome kitchen scene, but that one scene was enough to make me want more. Add in the fact that he's Magneto's son and brother to fellow mutants Scarlet Witch and Polaris and you've got the makings of one crazy family drama I for one would like to see. So there you have it, five other X-Men characters that we think should get their own standalone movies before Gambit.
