Far from being cynical nostalgia bait for NES kids, Shovel Knight is endearing in its own right, and feels fresher than you would expect of something that appears to have popped out of a time warp to the early nineties.
In addition to the shovel-pogoing action, Shovel Knight's gentle silliness goes down a treat. Keep watching the Xbox One gameplay above for a cameo from The Troupple King (a giant lordly fish-apple hybrid) and Chester, a merchant who hangs out inside chests (I only just got that).
