7 Best Superhero Costume Reveals

Zack Snyder created some major internet buzz when he shared our first look at Ben Affleck as Batman, but he's not the first filmmaker to get fans excited with a simple pic so today we're naming 7 of our favorite superhero costume reveals ever. First up, the one who started it all, Superman. Back in 1978, audiences had no idea what to expect when Christopher Reeves would hit the big screen as the iconic Superman, but they got their first look thanks to a print ad that ran in the pages of Life magazine. The photo was simple, but effective and marked the beginning of the superhero costume tease. Fast forward almost 25 years and another huge superhero was making his debut in a magazine too. This time it was Spider-Man in the pages of Entertainment Weekly. The picture was iconic and got both comic book fans and Spider-Man novices excited for the Sam Raimi directed film which went on to break box office records when it hit theaters in 2002. Ben Affleck is just the latest actor to put on the Batsuit and there have definitely been some highs and lows among the pack -- did someone say Batnipples? But the Batman that Affleck will be compared to the most is arguably the best to don the cowl and that is of course Christian Bale. Despite Batman & Robin having released almost a decade earlier, Batman fans still had a bad taste in their mouth and weren't sure if they were ready to give The Caped Crusader a second chance, but then Warner Bros released this pic of Bale in the costume that would become The Dark Knight and fans quickly knew this would be a whole new Batman. Probably the hero that had the most to prove was Marvel's Iron Man. When the studio announced they were going to start financing their own films, many critics questioned whether it was a smart move to put millions behind characters they called the "B-Team". Throw in a star that many considered a has-been and a director whose last film was the disappointing Zathura and you've got the recipe for a disaster. But then fans got a glimpse of what they were in store for and doubt quickly turned to excitement with one single pic. Now, the next reveal on our list isn't a superhero at all, but we had to include it just for the fact that it was just so damn cool. Released the same year as Iron Man, The Dark Knight was one of the most anticipated sequels of all-time, but many fans questioned whether Heath Ledger was the right actor to play the iconic Joker. Thanks to a viral marketing campaign launched during Comic-Con, fans were given the power to reveal the first image of Ledger as The Joker and this first look exceeded many fan's expectations and quickly erased any doubts that Ledger was The Joker. In 2010, we got our first look at future Avenger Chris Hemsworth as Thor. Fans worried about how the God of Thunder would be portrayed and they definitely breathed a collective sigh of relief when they got a glimpse of this pic. His armor and look seemed like it jumped straight out of the comics, though he was missing his iconic helmet, which continues to be a point of contention for fans even today. And finally, we come full circle with our 7th and final superhero costume reveal. Thanks to the rise of paparazzi set photos, this first image of Henry Cavill was released almost two years before he would fly onto movie screens as the Man of Steel. This was definitely not your father's Superman and the image gave fans just enough to ponder over and lots to get excited about . Now, if you spent the last week in an alternate dimension and missed the Ben Affleck Batman reveal, you can check it out right here.
