Here is a brief overview of the Lawmate 2.4 GHz 500mW transmitter. This is a very popular transmitter in the 2.4GHz band and is used with great results by three of my favorite FPV fliers: Team BlackSheep (nastycop420), rockyFLYR, and RCFlightTest (bonafidepirate). My early use of the two units I own has been very promising.
With a modest power of 500mW, this is a very compact transmitter with low power consumption, and relies on good antenna design and implementation for attaining good range rather than raw transmitting power.
It is rather finicky about the 5v power supply used, and one good solution is the dedicated PSU from New Generation Hobbies, designed specifically for this transmitter.
The heatsink is also attached to the unit in a very suboptimal way in that it does not conduct heat directly from the primary source (the RF chip) to the actual external heatsink on the exterior of the unit. Included in this video is a tutorial on one method of modifying the transmitter to allow much better cooling and therefore improved performance and longevity for the unit.
