Build It | Hawaiian Mango Keepsake Box
Tom works with a local woodworker to build a keepsake box out of mango wood.
Where to find it?
The box was built out of mango wood that was custom cut and milled. The splines were made of Cuban Mahogany and the bottom was koa wood. These tropical hardwoods may be ordered from some lumber yards or specialty woodworking shops.
To hold the box together and to serve as a finish, Tom and JJ used Original Gorilla Glue ().
To hold the hinges in place, they used Gorilla Super Glue. Both of these are manufactured by Gorilla Glue.
After the glue dried, a paste wax finished was rubbed on. Paste wax is sold at home centers and woodworking supply shops.
Expert assistance with this project was provided by JJ Custom Koa & Lumber ().
How to Install Home Solar Storage
Ask This Old House plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey learns how to add storage to an existing photovoltaic array.
Where to find it?
Richard installed the Enphase Storage System AC Battery, manufactured by Enphase (www.enphase.com).
How to Plant a Tropical Raised Garden
Roger plants raised beds and fruit trees that will grow well in Hawaii.
While this garden was specific to Hawaii, many of the same materials and principles apply when gardening across the United States. Untreated lumber like cedar or redwood should be used for the sides. Compost and top soil work well for growing fruits and vegetables. All of these items are available at home centers and garden centers.
These gardens contained a mixture of tropical plants like taro (also called kalo in Hawaiian), lemon trees, and lime trees, but there were also more traditional garden plants including tomato, pepper, eggplant, cilantro, green onion, parsley, Thai basil, and kale. Your local home center or garden center can recommend the best food plants for your area.
Expert assistance with this project was provided by Ma’o Organic Farms (), INPEACE () , PBS Hawaii (), and Hilton Hawaiian Village ().
