New Avengers 2 Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver Details From Film's Stars

The hype train on Marvel’s upcoming Avengers: Age of Ultron continues as two of the film’s stars share some details on their powerful new characters. In a recent Empire Magazine cover story focusing on the highly anticipated sequel, new additions Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen took a second to slow down and lower their force fields to talk about Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch and how their powers will be portrayed in the film. Acknowledging that Evan Peters’ amazing performance as Quicksilver in 20th Century Fox’s X-Men: Days of Future Past was already out there when he was offered the contract for Age of Ultron, Kick-Ass himself Taylor-Johnson revealed that film’s high praise didn’t faze him because the two films’ backgrounds, particularly Days of Future Past’s 70’s setting, differs greatly from Avengers 2’s story, making Johnson’s iteration of the character its own animal. And animal seems to be the right word as Johnson described Quicksilver as being agitated at the world working at a much slower pace than him, creating a character who expresses his quickly lost temper with physicality, especially when it involves protecting his sister, Wanda, portrayed by Olsen. Lucky for Olsen, she doesn’t constantly have her character compared to another recent version, but on the flip side, the actress was handed the challenge of defining a fan-favorite comic character for the first time on film in one of the biggest superhero movies to date. Like Quicksilver though, this is a new version of the character and they will differ heavily from their comic counterparts, most notably in the fact that they won’t be mutants. We can expect a new origin story for the two in the film, as teased in The Winter Soldier post-credits sequence and though we don’t yet know the specifics, Olsen did provide a hint saying Age of Ultron serves as an origin story for the siblings and that we won’t fully see the extent of their powers as the two will be learning to use them along the way. Those powers for Scarlet Witch, according to Olsen, include manipulating objects and sharing visions that she has with others. On how those powers might be portrayed, Olsen provided a surprising answer saying that her and Joss Whedon had decided that their version of Scarlet Witch’s powers would be more inspired by dance than a particular fighting style, making the behind the scenes photos of Olsen seem more interpretive dance-y than they already feel. Taylor-Johnson also perfected some particular moves for Quicksilver’s power portrayal, saying he learned to skid on his feet quite well, similar to how you would as a kid with socks on a hardwood floor, then filming the same scene again with other actors present, but minus himself, describing the final product as a blur of entrances and exits. Finally, Olsen gave a description of the two’s character motivations, likening it to some familiar issues in the world today explaining quote, “Obviously there are plenty of countries in the world that hate America, for whatever history and pain they believe it has caused their own country and their own lives. That is the world we have created for Wanda and Pietro, to have been brought up in…What you’re told a lot of times growing up is that that country, those people, their way of living is the reason why we have been bombed. [The Avengers] are the worst evil in Wanda and Pietro’s mind, not [Ultron] who hasn’t done anything yet.” Sounds like writer and director Joss Whedon is continuing the path set by The Winter Soldier and keeping the politics of our characters and their stories as topical as possible. We’ll have to wait and see if The Avengers can cure our world problems metaphorically until this summer, when Age of Ultron hits theaters on May 1st. But we have to ask, are you feeling more or less excited about the film now that we’re getting a little more insight to the powers and motivations of new members Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch? Do you think Joss Whedon will come up with a solid alternative to the mutant origin story we all know?
