Now that the secret is finally out, Jason Momoa is opening up about bringing Aquaman to the big screen. DC Comics’ Aquaman is a character that can often split comic book movie fans down the middle depending on if you think of him as an all-powerful underwater king [1] or a guy in a silly outfit that likes to ride around on seahorses [2]. Most fans of the comics, particularly DC New 52 version of the character know that while Aquaman may have had some speed bumps in the past, he’s really one serious badass and wider audiences will see that for themselves come 2016 when Jason Momoa is introduced as the King of Atlantis in next year’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Momoa, for those of you who don’t know, is a towering 6’4 Hawaiian piece of muscle who played the now legendary Khal Drogo for ten episodes on HBO’s Game of Thrones and while his first appearance as Aquaman is still a year away, that hasn’t stopped him from discussing his upcoming debut and how he will portray the Justice League member. Momoa recently finished filming the Sundance miniseries The Red Road and stopped by the independent film festival in Colorado to answer questions on a panel where the star was inevitably asked Aquaman questions though not from the typical young nerdy comic fan you’d expect – a 74 year old woman reportedly informed Momoa that Aquaman is her favorite comic book character ever and that she even bought the first issue when it debuted, and so, having seen all iterations of Aquaman she had to know: Will Jason be sporting a beard or mustache? Momoa obliged the fan as well as he could without revealing too much, saying, “I don’t think he is going to be blonde or white. I can’t really tell you because I haven’t shot it yet. I hate to disappoint. But um, you know, I’m a little different than...those others…” Jason mirrored these no-blonde comments in another interview with The Daily Beast, telling them how cool he thinks it is to be Hawaiian, representing all of the islanders he feels connected with, playing the diverse superhero that isn’t the traditional blonde-haired type. Momoa had gone on at Sundace to say that Zack Snyder’s proposal for how to introduce the Aquaman character in the upcoming Dawn of Justice film caused the actor’s jaw drop which is something he acknowledged doesn’t happen easily and that he was definitely chosen for a specific reason. We’re pretty excited to see what Momoa, Zack Snyder, and the rest of the DC crew have in store for Aquaman and his fellow Justice Leaguers, but we’ll still have a to wait a whole year as Momoa’s first appearance as The Aquatic Ace isn’t until Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice on March 25th, 2016, followed by Justice League: Part 1 in 2017, and finally a standalone Aquaman movie in 2018. So how do you feel about Jason Momoa playing Aquaman on the big screen and do you think it matters that he won’t be going blonde for the role?
