Edmunds Senior Writer Carlos Lago tests and reviews the 2018 BMW M4 equipped with the Competition package and a six-speed manual transmission. The current generation of the M4, which is the coupe variant of the M3, has been around since 2015. Though the M4's been a strong performer, similarly priced and even less expensive performance cars have steadily closed the gap. As a response, BMW introduced the M Competition package to sharpen the M4's reflexes by adding more power and more aggressive handling. Is it enough? That's what we find out in this review.
Q: How much does the 2018 BMW M4 cost?
A: Our 2018 BMW M4 test car starts at $68,695. The M Competition package, which increases horsepower and sharpens the handling, asks $4,750, while the racetrack-focused M carbon-ceramic brakes cost $8,150. Adding optional Apple CarPlay support, wireless charging, a head-up-display, and yellow paint job brings the total to $84,045.
Q: What kind of engine and transmission does the 2018 BMW M4 have?
A: The BMW M4 has a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder. The standard version makes 425 hp and 406 pound-feet of torque, but the Competition package increases output to 444 hp. A six-speed manual is standard, and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic is optional.
Q: How fast is the 2018 BMW M4?
A: During testing, the 2018 BMW M4 reached 60 mph in 4.3 seconds (4.0 seconds with a 1-foot rollout, as on a drag strip) and clocked a quarter-mile time of 12.4 seconds at 113.0 mph. M4s equipped with the automatic transmission are faster in a straight line.
Q: What are the 2018 BMW M4's main competitors?
A: The closest in terms of price and intent has to be the 2018 Mercedes-AMG C63 S. The AMG's twin-turbo V8 offers more power, but it's not available with a manual transmission. Also consider the 2018 Audi RS 5, whose all-wheel drive gives a slight edge in 0-60 mph acceleration even if it comes up a little short in handling.
