This device is very much tied into Amazon’s eco system. Voice searches only turn up results that appear on the Amazon app and video stores. Most of the menus direct users to Amazon content too.
The YouTube app, if you call it that, is an afterthought. It just links to the “lean back” version of their website. It does support Netflix and other popular video providers but not Google Play or Apple.
Gaming enthusiasts may want to look at an Android TV device for a few reasons. First the Nvidia Shield doesn’t cost all that more with a controller yet is significantly more powerful. The Google Play store has a broader selection of games as well as game emulators of classic consoles that is lacking on the Fire TV.
It’s also very difficult to run side loaded apps like Kodi, You have to dig through a menu to launch the app. Kodi also had trouble passing through Dolby Digital and DTS to my home theater receiver via HDMI.
In short there are better choices out there. I recommend the Nexus Player or the Nvidia Shield TV for gamers, the Roku 3 (and upcoming Roku 4) for TV and movie watchers.
