In this episode, the Roswell Flight Test Crew catches up with Vernon Kerswell of Extreme Fliers, who has developed the Micro Drone series of palm-sized multirotors. The Micro Drone 4.0 is that latest incarnation of his small, lightweight and inexpensive aerial camera platforms and incorporates a host of new features. Vernon set three goals for his latest design: steady, reliable flight performance; smooth video; and, an affordable price. To deliver stability, the Micro Drone 4.0 incorporates the same type of camera used in an endoscope for optical flow position hold. The drone carries a 12-megapixel Sony sensor on a two-axis gimbal, capturing 1080p HD video. Initially, the Micro Drone 4.0 will be controlled using either an Android or iOS app on a smartphone or tablet, although Vernon will subsequently introduce a conventional, two-joystick controller for the aircraft.
