Ugh.. I was so excited for the Mad Catz Mojo and really thought it would be the spiritual successor to the Ouya. And it might be some day, but right now it's half a product: great hardware with what is essentially a basic Android installation.
The device claims to be open and app store agnostic. That's true, but it also requires a lot of up front configuration that includes having to "root" the device. That process involves buying a USB cable you likely don't already have and doing some command-line work to implement it.
Contrary to the product description the device lacks the Amazon app store and the Ouya store, although it claims Ouya support is coming.
It does support the Google Play store, but a bulk of the games there won't run on the Mojo due to compatibility issues. Most of the software I was looking for simply wouldn't install from Play.
The hardware is kind of nice which makes its lack of usefulness all the more disappointing. The Mojo has a powerful Tegra 4 processor, 2 gigs of RAM and 16 gigs of storage. It also has a USB 3.0 port and MicroSD card slot.
So it has potential, but right now this is a half-baked product and only for uber geeks that really want something they can mess around with at the root level.
