AT Games Sega Genesis/Mega Drive Flashback HD | Nostalgia Nerd

Given I've covered the Fei Hao Chinese Mega Drive clone, I thought it was only fair to cover what passes as an officially licenced release, in the world of Sega; The AT Games Sega Genesis Flashback HD / AT Games Sega Mega Drive Flashback HD.
Now this little machine has received some bad press. It's often touted as the Mega Drive Mini or HD Genesis; essentially Sega's answer to the SNES Classic Mini. But, people have criticised everything from its sound, to its clunky menu system. But I'm not one to take what I hear as scripture. I'm going to test this Sega Flashback and find out if it's actually as bad as some people make out. I mean AT Games must surely have learnt by now... surely?
